There is a hue and cry from a section of Bengalis regarding attempted Hindi-isation of Bengalis in recent times as Ram Navami is being celebrated with much fanfare across Bengal.
The most vocal ones I see are mostly Chatujje/Barujje/Mukhujee/Gangulys ,I mean the Kulin Brahmins. Now you may hate your surnames and there s nothing wrong in it but unfortunately you cannot take out the history of who you are.
During the reign of Adisura, a Vaidya King of Bengal, the celebration of a yajna became necessary but there having been at that time no Brahmana so learned as to perform it, Adisura requested Virsinha, the King of Kanya Kubjya (Kanuaj), to send him some Brahmanas versed in the Veda and competent to perform the intended yajna. Five Brahmanas were accordingly sent:
1.Bhattanarayana [from whom the Tagore family sprung], who was said to be of Sandilya Gotra, being descended from the sage Sandilya;
2. Sriharsha of Bharadwaja Gotra, from the sage Bharadwaja;
3. Vedagarva of Sawarna Gotra, from the sage Sawarna;
4. Chhandara of Vatsya Gotra, from the sage Vatsya; and
5. Daksha of Kasyapa Gotra from the sage Kasypa
Along with them came their Kayastha assistants :
1. Makaranda Ghosh;
2. Kali Dasa Mitra;
3. Dasaratha Guha;
4. Dasartha Basu and
5. Purushottama Datta.
Many years after Adisura, Shyamal Varma, another Bengali King, also brought five Brahmanas from Kanauj, viz: 1. Sanaka; 2. Bhardwaja; 3. Savarna; 4. Sandilya; 5. Vasistha;
and got them settled in five villages, viz:
1.Samahtasar in Furreedpur; 2. Navadwip in Nuddea; 3. Chandradwip in Backergunj; 4. Kotaliparah in Furreedpur; and 5. Joyari in Rajshahi;
So now the Chatujje/Barujje/Mukhujee/Gangulys are having the gotras as SANDILYA/BHARADWAJA/SAWARNA/VATSYA and Kashyap AND GHOSH/GUHA/MITRA/BASU and DATTA are all from KANAUJ,UP.And you have assimilated in Bengal and call yourself Bengali and you are opposing CULTURAL ASSIMILATION and trying to create PURE BENGALI narrative which simply does not exist.In your extreme hatred for the Gau-boloy who have forgotten that you have come from there and you are an outsider in Bengal but this Maati has fostered you and nurtured you.
There is nothing like Pure Bengali or anything of that sort.We share the common sensibilities and civilization with the rest of Bharat and lets not try to fool ourselves with superficial identities.
Special thanks to Sanjoy Som dada for the valuable Gotra references.
