AMAZING ANCIENT TEMPLES:
Yantrodharaka Hanuman temple is in Hampi. Karnataka. In this place Hanuman icon is inside a Yantra (sacred geometric pattern) hence it is called Yantrodharaka.
There is an interesting incidence behind the appearance of this image.
Sri Vyasathirtharu, the great Dvaita saint who was the Guru of Krishnadeva Raya used to go to very serene spots on the banks of Tungabhadra River and sit in the seat of silence. One day, while he was meditating on a hillock near Chakra Teertha, he could visualize an image of Hanuman. Amazingly that visualisation happened only at that particular place. The seer was astonished at this but he left the outcome of this visualisation to Sri Hari
Sriman Madhva, the proponent of Davita Siddantha appeared in the dreams of Sri Vyasathirtharu and instructed him to install a Vigraha of Hanuman at the same spot where he could visualise Hanuman.
The next morning Sri Vyasathirtharu drew the image that came into his mind on to a rock using an Angara (charcoal used for rituals). To his surprise, a monkey came to life from the rock and jumped out of the rock and his drawing would disappear. He repeated drawing many times and every time, a monkey would jump out of the rock and the drawing would disappear. This happened 12 times. Sri Vyasathirtharu finally prayed to Hanuman and requested Him to stay in the image and then Sri Vyasathirtharu drew a geometric pattern to bind Hanuman in it.
In the core of the Yantra is the statue of Lord Hanuman in Padmasana position. This is probably one of the very few temples of Hanuman in a sitting position. Yantra has a 6 cornered star which is encircled by flames going outwards giving it the geometric pattern a look of a sun. A benzene ring like formation of 12 monkeys holding each others’ tails can also be found around the star and the sun which forms the outermost structure of the Yantra. This 12 monkey are to represent the 12 times Hanuman appeared and disappeared to Sri Vyasathirtharu.
Following this, it is believed Sri Vyasathirtharu installed 732 Hanuman temples all over South India. Even to this day, this temple is revered as a very sacred place and many people visit to get his blessings. It is in a cave on the banks of Tungabadra River about 2 kms from the famous Virupaksha Temple in Hampi, Karnataka.
