SHIVRATRI - DWADASH JYOTIRLING VANDANA - 03
(MAHAKALESHWAR, UJJAIN)
#3:
NAME: Mahakaleshwar (Lord of time, life & death)
LOCATION: Ujjain (Ancient Avantika)
REMARKS: It is also the only Jyotirling facing south and also the temple to have a Shree Rudra Yantra perched upside down at the ceiling of the Garbhagriha (where the Shiv Lingam sits).
ORIGINALLY BUILT BY: King Chandrasena of Avantika (Ujjain)
BRIEF HISTORY: King Chandrasena was an ardent devotee of Mahadev ji. Lord came in his Mahakal form to save King Chdrasena when the greedy kings from the neighboring kingdoms waged war to loot treasures of Avantika. The temple complex was destroyed by Sultan Shas-ud-din Iltutmish during his raid of Ujjain in 1234-5. Later on was rebuilt by several Maratha rulers.
VERSE TO WORSHIP:
