NAME: Bhimshankar (Lord Shiva that killed Bhimasura)
LOCATION: Bhimshankar, Pune, Maharashtra
ORIGINALLY BUILT BY: As it common to all Jyotirlingas, Prabhu Mahadev himself had taken the form of Shivling. But no info is available about the founders of the temple.
BRIEF HISTORY: An Asura named Bhima who was the son of Kumbhkarna was torturing people & sages. He also imprisoned Kamarupeshwar, who was a staunch devotee of Mahadev ji. Once , Bhimasura happened to visit him while he was worshiping Mahadev ji seeing which the Asura became outrageous & tried to kill Kamarupeshwar ji. Prabhu Mahadev ji appeared to save his devotee & annihilated the enemy in to ashes. Then as per the request of the sages, he took the form of Bhimshankar jyotirling and resided in the abode.
REMARKS: Bhimarathi river flows near the abode & the legend says Mahadev ji's sweat during the battle gave birth to the river
